Sylvari Guild Wars Version of Elves??? (this might of already be talked about)
Last night while I was reading all about guild wars 2 I was intrigued by the Sylvari. I know they are the byproduct of a Human and A Centaur, but the more I found out about them the more I thought of them as elves. They are Mystical, they have a natural connection to nature, and they look kind of like Elves (at least the concept art from the cancelled campaign Utopia).
Now I am a huge fan of Elves in all facets of Fantasy. So my question is do you thin Anet will make the Sylvari their brand of Elven character?? I mean they have other races based off popular Fantasy based races Asurans can be closely related to Gnomes (small clever) Charr could be the beasty characters such as orcs (Heavily believe in Clans and strengths) Norns can be considered Barbarians (All about the hunt and Valor) Last edited by XoVeR; Feb 21, 2008 at 12:51 AM // 00:51.. |

This has been discussed before. The general concensus is that Sylvari are the "elvish" style charater in GW2. Of course, it is all speculatative.
A.net has a lot of unique variations though and tends to stay away from exact fantasy archtypes. Only Prophecies introduces "traditional" RPG elements (undead, dwarves, centaurs etc). Factions and NF, with their Asian, Middle East, African themes are more unconventional (tengu, afflicited, demons, etc). Although the Sylvari may be "elf-like," I'm sure A.net will have a few twists. Oh, and the Norn are more Celtic then Barbarian. |

*cough* sylvari are part tree (arborean), therefore they are not elves..............as elves usually have skin, not bark
and they are not a byproduct of a human and a centaur, a human planted a tree and a centaur died under it, the sylvari worship the centaur |

There are countless RPG's that reference the Viking legends of "Elves". How they resemble other inturpretations should not be the issue. I'm hoping for something unique, but since this looks like a Druid/Elf Hybrid, I guess it's not too bad, even if not unique.

Sylvari are basically nymphs; nature spirits/embodiments of trees, plants, etc.
The have "delicate" features, which we usually associate w/ elves - lithe frames, pointed ears, large eyes, long flowing hair. Other than those features, though, they aren't elves. If anything, they could almost be the opposite of elves - Sylvari would be one of the youngest races in GW, not the oldest, like elves are usually portrayed. We don't know enough to tell if they're going to be "tree-huggers" of be able to use necromancy and steel weapons like other races... |

I think what A net will do is do what Warhammer Online is doing and each race will have 4-6 different classes that fit into the traditional MMORPG roles with a few different Twists. Like The Char would have Shamans medicine men, Humans have their Elementalists and Monks, Sylvari have their Druid type class. The classes serve the same role, just different ways of achieveing it. I think that would be awesome.
